In 1999, Shemsije lived with her husband Hakif and their three sons in the village of Nakarade, near Kosovo Polje. On the evening of April 21st, members of the Serbian Army came to their settlement. They told them that they were looking for weapons. They took Hakif, along with his two brothers and another 12 men from the Mirena family, from their homes, and placed them inside a truck. That was the last time Shemsije saw her husband. After the war, she was looking for him and asking around about his fate. Several years later, she found out that his body, along with the bodies of the other men from the Mirena family, was found in the mass grave in Batajnica.
